By temporarily immobilizing these muscles (for about 5 hours), cycloplegic refraction is the only true accurate measurement of a child's refractive error, especially if the child has hyperopia (farsightedness). Children can naturally turn on their accommodative system and overfocus, even when they do not need to. This makes obtaining accurate measurements impossible without cycloplegic eye drops.
